First Bank of Nigeria Limited, a leading financial
institution in the country has warned its depositors against revealing their personal
security information online, while emphasizing that the bank is working constantly
to ensure the trend is reduced drastically.
Recently, a mail regarding an online account upgrade went wide,
creating a strange scenario to non-First bank account holders.
The spam message reads, “Security on your internet banking is
important to us. This upgrading is to enable your account secured and also your
token device to work perfectly.”
But, information reaching our correspondent from the bank stated that the financial
institution would not ask its customers to reveal personal security information
including passwords, token numbers or Personal Identification Numbers to third
parties.
The bank had explained that, “Scammers responsible for these
fraudulent acts send the same messages to as many email addresses as they can
find. They don’t know your personal security details. The aim of the email was
to get personal security details.
“We’ll never ask our customers to disclose their personal or
security details by email. If you receive an email asking you to ‘verify your
account’, ‘confirm your sign-in details’, or a similar worded request, it’s
certainly a scam.
“Usually the links contained in these ‘phishing’ emails will
direct you to a site that asks you to ‘update’ or ‘verify’ your details on the
page. Be warned – these can appear to be genuine but don’t click on any of
these links or provide any of your security details.
“Genuine emails from FirstBank may contain links, but they’ll
never take you directly to the Online Banking log-in page. If you’re ever in
doubt about whether an email is genuine, don’t click on its links or open any
attachments,” First bank had warned.
